Role of operation in safety and life span of dam construction projects

Abstract : Sediments are one of the major threats to dams operation and cause many challenges in achieving preset goals.Yhere are several methods for controling sediment and preventing the damage caused by it.One of the most effective non-structural methods for protecting dams reservoirs from the threat of sediments is the development of a proper operation procedure for each dam, along with continuous monitoring and updating of the guidelines. In this article, with an overview of the concepts of the operation of dam and affiliated facilities, the requirements of a safe dam during the operation period are discussed and an example of the operation activities that prevented the early death of the dam - reservoir facility, are described.
The results of the operation correction of Sanmenxia Dam in China show that at the last stage of the correectional operation (1978), the ratio of the sediment discharge to the inlet sediment is equal to 100%, so, the modified control curve has been considered in operation and the result was periodic balance of inlet and discharge sediments and thus maintaining reservoir capacity. Also, applying de-sedimentation policies in operation over 10 years in the reservoir of the sefidround River Dam has led to the rehabilitation of the reservoir of the dam, equivalent to 420 milion cubic meters, which is 25% of the initial volume of the dam.
